What does it really mean to live a successful life?
Is success measured by professional achievement?
Is happiness the result of financial security?
Can a person achieve peak performance without sacrificing inner peace?
And how can someone transform their life without completely withdrawing from the responsibilities of modern living?
These are questions that Dr. Vijay Deshmukh has explored through decades of clinical practice, meditation, observation, motivational speaking, and writing.
An author, motivational speaker, life coach, and India’s leading implantologist, Dr. Deshmukh has observed the psychology and behaviour of thousands of people during his three decades of clinical practice.
His first English self-help book, Transform Life: Wisdom Thoughts for Success Happiness Inner Peace, was published in 2017 and went on to become a bestseller. The book was later translated into Marathi, reflecting its wider appeal.
His second book, Work Life Balance: How to Achieve Peak Performance in Work and Life, explores the relationship between professional achievement, stress management, personal relationships, and balanced living.
In this exclusive conversation, Dr. Deshmukh shares his thoughts on transformation, success, happiness, meditation, stress, and the meaning of a balanced life.
Q1. You describe yourself as an observer of life. What does that mean to you?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
To me, observing life means learning to look beyond the surface of events. We often react immediately to situations without understanding why we feel or behave in a particular way. Observation creates a small distance between an event and our reaction to it. Over the years, my clinical practice, meditation, conversations with people, and personal experiences have given me opportunities to observe human behaviour closely. I believe that when we observe carefully, many complex situations begin revealing simple underlying principles.
Q2. What was the motivation behind writing Transform Life?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
I wanted to share thoughts that could help people look at life differently. I have always felt that wisdom does not need to be complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes one simple thought, understood deeply, can change the way a person approaches a problem. Transform Life is therefore intended as a guide for self-unfoldment. It brings together ideas influenced by ancient wisdom, including the teachings of the Shrimad Bhagwad Gita, along with observations relevant to modern life.
Q3. The book combines ancient wisdom with modern scientific knowledge. Why is this combination important?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
Ancient wisdom addressed many fundamental questions about the mind, purpose, attachment, action, and happiness. Modern knowledge gives us additional ways of understanding behaviour, psychology, habits, and the human mind. I believe these perspectives can complement each other. The objective is not to separate spirituality from everyday life, but to understand how deeper principles can help us deal with modern challenges. When wisdom becomes applicable to daily life, it becomes truly valuable.
Q4. What does “success” mean to you?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
Success is much larger than professional achievement or financial growth. These are important aspects of life, but they should not become the only definition of success. If a person achieves significant professional results but continuously experiences stress, poor health, broken relationships, or dissatisfaction, something is missing. I believe complete success includes achievement as well as contentment, meaningful relationships, emotional stability, and inner peace. The balance between outer accomplishment and inner well-being is extremely important.
Q5. Why do successful people still experience stress and unhappiness?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
Achievement does not automatically eliminate stress. In fact, sometimes greater responsibility creates greater pressure. The problem occurs when people believe that the next achievement will finally make them happy. They continuously postpone happiness into the future. My approach is to encourage people to perform sincerely while also learning to experience contentment in the present. When happiness becomes completely dependent on external achievement, the mind remains in a constant state of wanting.
Q6. What role does meditation play in personal transformation?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
Meditation creates an opportunity to observe the mind. We spend much of our lives reacting to thoughts, emotions, and external situations. Meditation can help us become more aware of these patterns. With regular practice, this awareness can influence the way we respond to stressful situations. I consider meditation an important tool for mind management and self-observation. It is not about escaping life; it is about developing greater clarity while continuing to live responsibly.
Q7. Your second book focuses on work-life balance. What is the biggest mistake professionals make?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
One major mistake is believing that professional life is the whole of life. Ambition is valuable, but when career responsibilities consume every dimension of a person’s existence, imbalance develops. Family, health, personal interests, social relationships, and inner development also require attention. In Work Life Balance, I use the idea of different time zones of life to explain this. Peak performance becomes sustainable when these different dimensions are managed intelligently rather than allowing one dimension to dominate everything.
Q8. Can someone really achieve peak performance without working constantly?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
Absolutely. Continuous work does not necessarily mean continuous productivity. The mind and body require recovery, and performance is influenced by energy, concentration, emotional state, and clarity. A person who is exhausted may spend many hours working without producing their best results. Intelligent scheduling, appropriate rest, focused work, and balanced living can actually improve performance. Peak performance is about quality and sustainability, not simply the number of hours spent working.
Q9. What would you say to someone who feels stuck in life?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
Begin with observation rather than judgment. Ask yourself what exactly feels stuck and why. Sometimes we are trying to change an external situation when the deeper issue is our interpretation of it. Start with one small area that you can influence today. Develop awareness, learn something new, speak with someone you trust, and take one constructive action. Transformation does not always begin with a dramatic decision; sometimes it begins with a small change in perspective.
Q10. What is the message you want readers to carry after reading your books?
Answer by Dr. Vijay Deshmukh:
I would like readers to understand that they have greater capacity for transformation than they may realize. Success should not require sacrificing happiness, and spirituality should not require abandoning everyday responsibilities. We can pursue excellence while maintaining balance. We can work hard while taking care of ourselves and our relationships. Ultimately, I hope my books encourage readers to understand themselves better, simplify life, manage the mind, and move toward a state of greater contentment and inner peace.
Two Books, One Larger Philosophy
Although the two books approach life from different perspectives, they share a common philosophy.
Transform Life focuses strongly on the inner journey—thoughts, self-unfoldment, meditation, positive thinking, visualization, mind management, success, happiness, and inner peace.
Work Life Balance takes these principles into the practical world of professional and personal responsibilities.
Together, they present an interesting progression:
Understand the mind → Transform the mindset → Manage life intelligently → Achieve sustainable performance → Experience greater happiness and peace.

Final Reflection
The most interesting aspect of Dr. Vijay Deshmukh’s philosophy is that transformation is not presented as an escape from ordinary life.
It is about learning to live ordinary responsibilities with greater awareness.
Career ambition can coexist with family.
Professional excellence can coexist with inner peace.
Success can coexist with happiness.
And modern living can coexist with reflection and spiritual growth.
Perhaps that is the deeper message connecting both books: the objective is not simply to change what we achieve, but to transform the person who is achieving it.
