    Introduction

Every memorable novel begins with an idea, but the stories that remain with readers long after the final page are often born from careful observation, empathy, and a deep understanding of human nature. Through her growing collection of contemporary fiction, Shahnaz Zaidi has established herself as an author who transforms everyday experiences into emotionally compelling narratives.

Her novels—Ladies Dabba, Birds of Paradise, Foxglove: A Tussle between Luck and Destiny, and Baby’s Breath—explore diverse themes ranging from friendship and resilience to identity, compassion, and hope. Although each story unfolds in a different setting, they share a common thread: an unwavering belief in the strength of ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances.

In this exclusive interview with LearnTransformation, Shahnaz Zaidi reflects on her writing journey, the inspiration behind her books, the art of creating unforgettable characters, and why authentic storytelling remains one of literature’s greatest strengths.

    Exclusive Interview

    1. Your novels explore very different worlds—from a ladies’ train compartment and wartime Kolkata to Dharavi and Khan’s Haveli. What inspires you to choose such diverse settings?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

Every place has its own rhythm, memories, and untold stories. I have always believed that settings should contribute to the narrative rather than merely serving as a backdrop. Whether it is a train compartment filled with strangers or the bustling streets of Dharavi, each location reflects a different aspect of society. I enjoy observing how environments influence people’s emotions, decisions, and relationships. Choosing diverse settings allows me to explore different layers of human experience while remaining rooted in realism.

    2. Across all four of your novels, readers find ordinary individuals facing extraordinary challenges. Why are these characters so important to you?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

I have always been fascinated by ordinary people because they often display extraordinary courage without seeking recognition. Life presents countless silent battles that rarely make headlines, yet they shape who we become. I want my readers to recognize themselves in my characters and realize that resilience exists in everyday life. Writing about relatable individuals helps create emotional connections that stay with readers long after they finish the book. Their journeys remind us that heroism often appears in the quietest moments.

    3. Birds of Paradise beautifully blends friendship with historical events surrounding the Indo-Pak War of 1971. How did you approach balancing history with personal emotions?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

Historical events provide the backdrop, but my primary focus has always been on the people living through those moments. Wars are remembered through dates and political decisions, yet ordinary families experience them through loss, uncertainty, and hope. While researching the period, I constantly reminded myself that the emotional truth of the characters should remain central. Zulu and Bulbul’s friendship became the emotional lens through which readers could experience history in a more personal and meaningful way.

    4. In Foxglove, Kubdu transforms himself into Anmol Sone despite facing prejudice and physical challenges. What message did you hope readers would take from his journey?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

Kubdu’s story is about redefining identity rather than accepting the labels society imposes. Every individual has moments when they feel underestimated or misunderstood. Through his determination, I wanted readers to understand that true transformation begins with self-belief. External circumstances may influence our journey, but they should never define our worth. His decision to become Anmol Sone symbolizes hope, courage, and the belief that every person possesses priceless potential waiting to be discovered.

    5. Compassion is at the heart of Baby’s Breath. Why did you choose empathy as one of the novel’s strongest themes?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

Compassion has the power to change lives in ways that often go unnoticed. While writing Baby’s Breath, I wanted to show that encouragement, patience, and unconditional love can become the foundation for extraordinary personal growth. Pari’s journey reflects how people flourish when they are accepted rather than judged. In today’s fast-paced world, empathy sometimes feels overlooked, yet it remains one of the greatest strengths we can offer one another. I hope readers carry that message into their own lives.

    6. Your books never rely on exaggerated drama, yet they remain deeply engaging. How would you describe your storytelling philosophy?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

I believe authenticity creates a stronger emotional impact than sensationalism. Real life is filled with subtle moments, quiet emotions, and small decisions that often shape our destiny more than dramatic events. My writing focuses on observing these details carefully and allowing the characters to evolve naturally. I trust readers to appreciate emotional honesty rather than constant excitement. For me, storytelling is about creating genuine connections that encourage reflection rather than simply delivering entertainment.

    7. Your novels feature strong female characters as well as vulnerable male protagonists. How do you approach creating balanced and believable characters?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

I never begin with the intention of creating a “strong” or “weak” character. Instead, I focus on creating human beings with dreams, fears, strengths, and imperfections. Every person carries emotional scars as well as hidden courage, and I try to portray that balance honestly. My female characters are resilient because life has taught them resilience, while my male characters are allowed to express vulnerability because that is equally human. I believe readers connect most deeply with characters who feel authentic rather than idealized.

    8. Looking across Ladies Dabba, Birds of Paradise, Foxglove, and Baby’s Breath, what common thread connects all four books?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

Although each novel tells a completely different story, they are united by one central belief—that every individual has a story worth telling. Whether it is a woman travelling by train, two childhood friends separated by history, a young boy determined to redefine himself, or a child growing through love and acceptance, each character reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit. I hope readers come away realizing that compassion, courage, and hope are universal values that connect us all regardless of our circumstances.

    9. Today’s publishing world is more competitive than ever. What advice would you give to aspiring authors who are preparing to publish their first book?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

My first advice is to write honestly and remain patient with the creative process. Don’t chase trends or try to imitate another writer’s voice. Every author has a unique perspective that deserves to be expressed authentically. Once the book is complete, remember that publishing is only one part of the journey. Authors should also think about connecting with readers through meaningful conversations, professional presentation, and thoughtful promotion. A wonderful story deserves visibility, and investing in author branding and book promotion can help ensure that it reaches the people who will truly appreciate it.

    10. Looking ahead, what would you like readers to remember most about your books and your journey as an author?

    Answer by Shahnaz Zaidi:

If readers remember one thing, I hope it is the emotions my stories leave behind rather than the plots themselves. I want them to remember the courage of ordinary people, the value of empathy, and the importance of hope during difficult times. Writing has always been my way of understanding people and celebrating humanity in all its complexity. If my books encourage someone to see the world with greater compassion or inspire them to believe in themselves, I would consider that the greatest achievement of my literary journey.

More Than Stories: Building Meaningful Connections with Readers

One of the most inspiring aspects of Shahnaz Zaidi’s work is that her novels never seek to impress readers through spectacle alone. Instead, they invite reflection, empathy, and conversation. Each story leaves space for readers to interpret experiences through their own lives, making the books memorable long after the final chapter.

In today’s publishing landscape, this kind of authentic storytelling deserves to reach wider audiences. However, even exceptional books need strategic visibility to connect with readers.

For authors, that means looking beyond publication and investing in:

    • Professional author branding
    • Book promotion campaigns
    • Amazon optimization
    • Goodreads visibility
    • Media features and interviews
    • Reader engagement strategies

Her novels explore timeless themes of resilience, friendship, identity, compassion, and hope—reminding readers that literature has the power to inspire, heal, and connect.

As this conversation reveals, her writing philosophy is grounded in authenticity and empathy. Rather than chasing trends, she focuses on creating stories that reflect the complexities of human experience. In doing so, she has established a distinctive voice in contemporary Indian fiction—one that continues to resonate with readers seeking meaningful, emotionally rich narratives.
