Discussing the Past, Present, and Future of Supply Chain Management with Mohammad Iqbal

LT Network: What are the major turning points in the history of supply chain management, and how have they shaped the field?

Mohammad Iqbal:  The evolution of supply chain management is a fascinating example of creative problem solving. Its roots are purely logistical, with an early emphasis on the smooth flow of goods from producers to end users. Its development was sped up by the arrival of globalisation and technical advances. Before, supply chains were linear and compartmentalised, making them difficult to monitor and react to. But historical turning points like the advent of JIT principles, Six Sigma methodology, and the incorporation of ERP systems completely reworked supply networks. These landmarks marked the beginning of a period of increased productivity, shorter lead times, and better collaboration between all parties along the value chain. The supply chain evolved from an expense centre into a growth driver for the company.

    Leader’s Tip
First, be open to change. Leaders in the supply chain must have a broad knowledge of operations, finances, and technology. This gives them the flexibility to deal with complexity.

LT Network: This is a stunning change. As we move into the present, could you describe the situation of supply chain management as it stands right now? How have digital technologies affected supply chain planning and management at global corporations?

Mohammad Iqbal: There has never been a time in the history of supply chain management with more connection and digitalization. Opportunities to streamline operations and improve judgement have exploded with the advent of digital technology. The Internet of Things (IoT), AI, big data analytics (Big Data), and block chain are all being used by multinational corporations to organise faultless supply chain operations. No longer are goals like real-time data interchange, predictive analytics, and full visibility across the entire process. With the help of digital supply chain platforms, businesses can better predict demand, deal with interruptions, and improve operations. Supply chain agility has been further boosted by the convergence of e-commerce and omni channel shopping. It has allowed businesses to more accurately satisfy the ever-changing demands of their customers.

LT Network: Supply chain management has undergone a radical transformation as a result of the introduction of digital technologies. How do you think supply chain management will develop in the future? What will a supply chain leader do differently as a result of technological developments and shifts in the market?

Mohammad Iqbal:  Innovation and teamwork will characterise the supply chain management landscape of the future. Leaders in the supply chain of the future will be strategic orchestrators who work across disciplines. Supply chain experts will increasingly use real-time data analytics for purposes such as predictive demand forecasting, optimising inventory levels, and cutting waste as technology advances. Autonomous decision making and dynamic risk management will be made possible through the combination of AI and machine learning.

The implementation of green supply chain practises will be pushed forward by the growing importance of sustainability and ethical sourcing. Leaders in the supply chain will be able to navigate cross-departmental alliances, encourage supplier cooperation, and build value-driven ecosystems together. A supply chain leader’s responsibilities will expand beyond day-to-day operations. It will include providing strategic direction that helps businesses become more robust and long-lasting.

    Leader’s Tip
Second, put cooperation first. For the supply chain as a whole to work well, there needs to be good contact and partnerships between different departments.

LT Network : To see the future of management through your eyes is fascinating. As we wrap off, I was hoping you might offer two pieces of advise to aspiring supply chain leaders who want to make a difference in their companies?

Mohammad Iqbal:  To start, commit to lifelong education. Keeping abreast of new developments in supply chain technology and industry best practises is essential as the industry as a whole is always shifting. Second, encourage people to think creatively and work together. In order to boost supply chain efficiency and customer happiness, it is important to encourage cross-functional teams to explore innovative ideas and use digital tools.

LT Network: Could you give us a sentence that sums up our conversation about the development and prospects of supply chain management?

Mohammad Iqbal: “From logistical roots to digital frontiers, supply chain management evolves as a strategic compass, driving business success in a dynamic global landscape.”

LT Network: Mr. Iqbal, I appreciate you talking about the supply chain’s evolution so thoroughly. Your insights can help supply chain managers find their way in the increasingly complex business world of today.

Mohammad Iqbal: Thank you very much. The future of supply chain management is bright, and I have no doubt that savvy managers will lead their companies to unprecedented success and expansion.

What is supply chain management, and why should businesses care about it?

It is the process of making sure that all the steps in making, distributing, and delivering things or services to customers are coordinated from start to finish. It’s important for businesses because it improves efficiency, cuts costs, and makes sure goods are always available at the right time.

How does technology affect supply chain management in the 21st century?

What are the biggest problems that supply chain management has to deal with?

Challenges include fluctuating demand, problems with the supply chain, complicated product management, and the need to find a balance between cost efficiency and sustainability. It is also hard to get all the different people involved to work together smoothly.

How can managing the supply chain help with sustainability and doing the right thing?

It can help drive sustainable practises by ensuring responsible sourcing, reducing waste, finding the best routes for transportation, and building relationships with suppliers who care about social issues.
